Reset a User's Password

Topic Last Modified: 2009-08-05

When a user forgets their password and can't recover it from login.live.com, you can reset the password for them. Here's how:

  1. Select My Organization > Users & Groups > Mailboxes.
  2. In the Mailbox list, select the mailbox. For a large list of mailboxes, use the Search mailboxes field and type all or part of a display name.
  3. Click Reset Password, and enter the following information:
    • * Password   The password length must be between six and 16 characters. It's a good idea to use strong passwords that are at least eight characters long, and combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. For more information, see Password Requirements.
    • * Confirm password   Retype the password to verify that you typed it correctly.
    • Require password change on next logon   It's always a good idea to select this option, because it forces the user to change their password right away. If you don't select this option, the user may never change it.
  4. When you're finished, click Save.

Important   To reset passwords, you need to be a member of the Organization Management or Helpdesk administrator role group.
