Block Password Reset for Live@edu Domains

Applies to: Live@edu

Topic Last Modified: 2011-03-19

You can allow or block users in primary or accepted Live@edu domains from changing or resetting their passwords in Windows Live. You can also redirect users to a Web page, managed by your school, where they can reset their password.

When would you want to prevent students from resetting their passwords in Windows Live?

  • Your school may want to control their password data.
  • You want to prevent elementary students from resetting their passwords so that teachers always know the password for the student's account.
  • You want to implement a single sign-on solution.
  • You want to use Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) and Password Change Notification Service (PCNS) to provision users and synchronize passwords between Windows Live and on-premises passwords.

Configure password reset settings

  1. Sign in to the Live@edu Service Management Portal with the Windows Live ID that is the administrator for the primary tenant Outlook Live domain.
  2. Click Domains. On the Domains page, click the domain that you want to configure the password reset settings for.
  3. Under Password Reset Settings, click Edit these settings.
  4. Select one of the following options:
    • Allow domain members to reset passwords in Windows Live
If you select this option, users can change their passwords in Windows Live.
    • Block domain members from resetting passwords in Windows Live
If you select this option, an error message is displayed when users try to change their passwords in Windows Live.
    • Redirect domain members to the following Web site to reset their passwords
If you select this option, type the URL for the Web site, and then click Test to verify that the URL is correct and the Web site can be accessed. Users will be redirected to the specified Web site when they try to change their passwords in Windows Live.
  5. Click Save.

Note   It may take up to 24 hours for the new setting to take affect.
