Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) is the synchronization solution for Microsoft Live@edu customers. If you are running a cloud-based e-mail service with Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises, you must use the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization tool to synchronize your directories.

Before you synchronize all the accounts in the provisioning domain, we recommend that you test the Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) synchronization by creating test accounts in a test organizational unit in your on-premises provisioning domain. By performing the initial synchronization with test accounts from a test organizational unit, you can verify that accounts are synchronized and provisioned as you planned.

After you have verified that the test accounts are synchronized and provisioned as you planned, you can configure Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 or Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 FP1 to filter the "production" organizational units in your on-premises Active Directory forest.

Here's how you specify which organizational units are synchronized during a OLSync synchronization.

  1. If you’re using FIM 2010, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager > Synchronization Service.
If you’re using ILM 2007, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Identity Integration Server > Identity Manager.
  2. In the Identity Manager window, click Management Agents.
  3. Under Management Agents, double-click the OnPremise management agent.
  4. On the Properties page, click Configure Directory Partitions. Next to Select containers for this partitions, click Containers.
  5. In the Credentials dialog box, enter the user name and password for an on-premises user account, and then click OK.
  6. If the credentials you entered are valid, the Select Containers dialog box is displayed. Clear the checkboxes on all containers, except for the organizational units that you want to synchronize, and then click OK.
  7. On the Properties page, click OK.
