Answers
I completed my enrollment and I immediately started creating new mailboxes. Now, some new mailboxes don't appear in the shared address book. What's wrong?
After you enroll your domain, wait at least five minutes for internal datacenter updates to finish. If you create a mailbox before the updates have finished, the new mailboxes may not appear in the shared address book in Outlook or the Outlook Web App client, even though the mailbox is displayed in the Exchange Control Panel.
For the mailboxes that don't appear in the address book, you have to modify one of the properties of the mailbox, such as the display name or contact information. After you modify the mailbox properties and save the changes, the mailbox will appear in the address book.
I created a new mailbox and immediately sent test messages to it. The test messages are returned with a non-delivery report (NDR). What's wrong?
After you create a new mailbox, wait at least three minutes before you send messages to the mailbox. After three minutes, the new mailbox should accept new messages.
How do I give another user access to organization-level administrative functionality in my cloud-based domain?
Exchange Online administrators can access the organization-level administrative functionality of the Exchange Control Panel. Here's how to promote an existing cloud-based account: Give Users Administrator Permissions.
I can't enroll an account in Family Safety from Windows Live OneCare. What's wrong?
If you have created a cloud-based account for a child under 18 years old, you will get an error if you try to enroll the associated Windows Live ID in Family Safety from Windows Live OneCare. Accounts for users under 18 aren't compatible with Family Safety.
Do you support proxy addresses?
Yes. See Proxy Addresses.
Do you support a catch-all mailbox that accepts all incoming mail for invalid e-mail addresses?
No, we don't support a catch-all mailbox.
What is the deleted item retention period?
For more information, see Message and Recipient Limits.
Can I send a message from a distribution group?
For more information, see Give Users Send As Permission.
What is the backup and restore strategy for mailboxes? Are backups of mailboxes available, or can an administrator create a mailbox backup?
Traditional backups are not performed on cloud-based mailboxes. The datacenter uses database availability groups (DAGs) to provide high availability and redundancy for mailboxes. Four copies of each mailbox exist in the datacenter, with multiple online copies of the data. If a user inadvertently deletes items from their mailbox, they can use Outlook Web App > Deleted Items > Recover Deleted Items to recover deleted items. In most cases, an administrator can recover a deleted mailbox within 30 days. A user can create a backup of their own mailbox by exporting its contents to a PST file.
Can an administrator or user create a "reply to" address for their account or a user account?
An administrator can change the primary address that used as the "From" address on all messages sent from the cloud-based mailbox. The primary address can be different than the Windows Live ID of the cloud-based account. For more information, see Change a User's Primary E-mail Address.
Users who have configured subscriptions to receive mail from other POP3 or IMAP4 mailboxes can reply to messages using the subscribed e-mail address. For more information, see Learn About Connected Accounts.
But, even when a cloud-based mailbox has more than one proxy address configured, the user can't select from a list of "From" addresses before they send a message. For information about assigning proxy addresses to a mailbox, see Add or Remove Proxy Addresses to a User's Account.
If you give a user Send As permission, also known as SendAs permission, to a recipient, the user can open their own mailbox and send messages using the From address of the recipient. For more information, see Give Users Send As Permission.
How do I get detailed information that isn't accessible using the available management tools, for example, to respond to a litigation, subpoena, or law enforcement request?
To capture data that you can't access with the existing tools, contact Microsoft support.
