Applies to: Office 365 for professionals and small businesses, Office 365 for enterprises, Live@edu

Topic Last Modified: 2011-07-13

Before you cancel your Exchange Online e-mail service, you need to consider your users’ mailbox data. If you cancel your service, all the mailboxes in your domain will be deleted. So if your users want to maintain their mailbox data, before you cancel your service, someone has to export the mailbox data. For more information, see Export Mailbox Data From Exchange Online.

Now let’s look at how an administrator can cancel their Exchange Online e-mail service for Microsoft Office 365 or Microsoft Live@edu.

If you cancel your Live@edu service, the existing Windows Live IDs will continue to work as Windows Live IDs without an associated mailbox. To continue to use these Windows Live IDs, do one of the following:

  • If you want to use these Windows Live IDs again after you re-enroll the domain in the cloud-based service, you have to import the existing Windows Live IDs back into the cloud-based service and create new mailboxes for them. For more information, see Import or Evict Existing Windows Live IDs in Live@edu.
  • If you want to use a Windows Live ID after you permanently cancel your service, make sure that the Windows Live ID has an alternate e-mail address. To do this, log on at http://login.live.com/. On the account summary page, click Add next to Alternate e-mail address.

To cancel your Live@edu service, do the following:

  1. Open the Windows Live Admin Center and then click Sign in. Sign in using the Windows Live ID and password of a Windows Live Admin Center domain administrator.
  2. On the Your domain page, click your domain name.
  3. On the Domain settings page, under Administrator status, click Cancel service.
  4. In the Cancel services warning window, click Yes.
