DNS Records for Live@edu

When you enroll your organization, you need to configure your DNS records so your organization can send and receive e-mail, and your users can connect to the service with various client applications.

Here's a roadmap to the DNS records used for the cloud-based service. To learn more about how to configure these records at your domain registrar, see Detailed instructions for specific domain registrars.

DNS record Purpose Value to use

TXT

A TXT record can be used to prove that you own the domain.

MX

An MX record can be used to prove that you own the domain. This is a separate record than the MX record used to direct mail routing, and has a specific format.

MX

This value directs all incoming mail for the domain to the cloud-based service and also proves domain ownership. When you enroll, you have to remove any preexisting MX records that aren't related to the cloud-based service from your domain's DNS hosting service.

CNAME

This value allows Outlook clients to connect to the cloud-based service by using the Autodiscover service.

SPF (TXT)

This value identifies authorized outbound e-mail servers so destination messaging servers trust messages originating from your cloud-based domain.

SRV

This value allows your cloud-based domain to share instant messaging (IM) features with clients other than Windows Live Messenger.
