Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) is the synchronisation solution for Microsoft Live@edu customers. If you are running a cloud-based email service with Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises, you must use the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronisation tool to synchronise your directories.

Before you synchronise all the accounts in the provisioning domain, we recommend that you test the Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) synchronisation by creating test accounts in a test organisational unit in your on-premises provisioning domain. By performing the initial synchronisation with test accounts from a test organisational unit, you can verify that accounts are synchronised and provisioned as you planned.

After you have verified that the test accounts are synchronised and provisioned as you planned, you can configure Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 or Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 FP1 to filter the "production" organisational units in your on-premises Active Directory forest.

Here's how you specify which organisational units are synchronised during a OLSync synchronisation.

  1. If you’re using FIM 2010, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager > Synchronisation Service.
If you’re using ILM 2007, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Identity Integration Server > Identity Manager.
  2. In the Identity Manager window, click Management Agents.
  3. Under Management Agents, double-click the OnPremise management agent.
  4. On the Properties page, click Configure Directory Partitions. Next to Select containers for this partitions, click Containers.
  5. In the Credentials dialogue box, enter the user name and password for an on-premises user account, and then click OK.
  6. If the credentials you entered are valid, the Select Containers dialogue box is displayed. Clear the tick boxes on all containers, except for the organisational units that you want to synchronise, and then click OK.
  7. On the Properties page, click OK.
