| Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync) is the synchronisation solution for Microsoft Live@edu customers. If you are running a cloud-based email service with Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises, you must use the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronisation tool to synchronise your directories. |
Now that you've completed the configuration and initial synchronisation of Outlook Live Directory Sync (OLSync), you need to verify that the synchronisation and provisioning are successful.
What does successful synchronisation look like? Some accounts in your on-premises organisation should be auto-provisioned as Windows Live users with Outlook Live mailboxes in your Outlook Live domain. Other accounts are provisioned in Outlook Live as mail users and contacts. Also, all users and contacts from the on-premises provisioning domain should be synchronised in the Outlook Live shared address book.
Verify mailbox provisioning
To verify mailbox provisioning, you have to sign in to the Outlook Live domain using one of the newly-provisioned Outlook Live mailbox user accounts. Before you can sign in, you need to retrieve the password for that user.
If you are using the Password Change Notification Service (PCNS) with Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 or Microsoft Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM) 2007 FP1, or if your on-premises organisation is running in a Connected Federation environment, changing the on-premises password for the user will change the password for the corresponding Outlook Live user.
Otherwise, the password that you entered for this user when you created it in Microsoft Exchange isn't ported over to Outlook Live. Instead, a random password is generated for each user. The password file is stored on the FIM 2010 or ILM server according to the optional parameter that you set on the OLSync Hosted management agent in OLSync.
-
Retrieve the password for the test user.
-
Open a supported Web browser and sign in at https://outlook.com/owa using the test user credentials.
Mailbox provisioning was successful if you can sign in using the test user credentials.
Synchronisation was successful if all objects that you created in the on-premises Exchange organisation show up in the Outlook Live shared address book.
Verify mail user provisioning
-
Connect Windows PowerShell to the Service.
-
Run the following cmdlets to view the various accounts that have been created in Outlook Live:
If the accounts exist, each of these cmdlets will return account information.
If you encounter errors, see Troubleshoot Outlook Live Directory Sync.
Next steps
To run OLSync against other organisational units in your on-premises provisioning domain, perform the following procedures:
-
Specify the On-Premises Organisational Units that are Synchronised to Outlook Live
-
Perform a Full OLSync Synchronisation to Outlook Live
When you're satisfied with the OLSync configuration, and later, when you make changes to users, contacts, or mail users in the on-premises provisioning domain, you have to run a specific set of FIM 2010 or ILM 2007 FP1 synchronisation operations to keep Outlook Live updated. To learn how, see Perform Subsequent OLSync Data Synchronisations to Outlook Live.
