Answers
How do I migrate Outlook users' existing messaging data to Outlook Live?
You have the following options:
-
If the mailboxes are in an on-premises messaging system that supports IMAP4, you can migrate a user's mailbox data to Outlook Live. For more information, see Migrate Email from an IMAP Server to Cloud-based Mailboxes.
-
If the mailboxes are in a small Exchange organisation, you can export the mailboxes to Personal Folder (.pst) files. For more information, see Migrate an Existing Small Exchange Organisation to the Service.
-
Outlook users can migrate their own current Outlook mailboxes using a Personal Folder (.pst) file. Here's how: Move an Outlook data file from one computer to another.
I migrated my existing Exchange organisation to Outlook Live. Now, when my users open Outlook, they get a warning that says their mailbox has been moved, and they are asked if they want to use a new temporary mailbox or use old data. What's wrong?
The warning message may look like this:
Your mailbox has been temporarily moved on Microsoft Exchange server. A temporary mailbox exists, but might not have all of your previous data. You can connect to the temporary mailbox or work offline with all of your old data. If you choose to work with your old data, you cannot send or receive e-mail messages.
This warning appears if your users try to open their Outlook Live mailbox using the Outlook profile that they used to access their old Exchange mailbox. If cached mode is enabled in Outlook, the Offline Folder file (OST) that is associated with the existing Outlook profile is associated to the old mailbox. This association of an OST file to a mailbox can't be modified. To fix the problem, tell your users to close Outlook and do one of the following:
-
Follow the instructions in Migrate an Existing Small Exchange Organisation to the Service. Specifically, the procedure recommends that your users should create a completely different Outlook profile to access their Outlook Live mailbox.
-
If your users want to continue to use their existing Outlook profile, they have to move or delete the existing OST file. If cached mode is enabled, Outlook will create a new OST file the next time they open Outlook.
In Windows Vista, the OST file is inC:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.
In Windows XP, the OST file is inC:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

How do I transfer my domain from Office Live to Outlook Live?
To transfer your domain from Office Live to Outlook Live, you have to cancel your existing Office Live service. However, before you do that, be aware of the following issues:
-
When you cancel your Office Live service, you will lose all data in all mailboxes in your Office Live domain.
-
All the Windows Live IDs from your Office Live domain that were using Office Live mail may be unusable. After you complete your Outlook Live enrolment, when you try to recreate an account, you may receive a warning that the Windows Live ID already exists, and you may get the option to import or evict the Windows Live ID. If this happens, choose Import to keep your existing Windows Live ID intact. If you aren't given the choice to import or evict the Windows Live ID, you have to recreate the accounts in your Outlook Live domain by using a different length password. For more information, see Import or Evict Existing Windows Live IDs in Live@edu.
-
After you've cancelled your Office Live service, you should be able to enrol your domain in Outlook Live. If you can't, contact Office Live support to confirm that your domain has been completely removed from Office Live.
When you are ready to cancel your Office Live service, follow these steps:
-
Back up all your mailbox data to an Outlook Personal Folder (.pst) file by using the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.
-
Log on to http://www.officelive.com with the Windows Live ID you used to set up your domain.
-
On the left side of the page, click Add/Manage Services.
-
On the Add/Manage Services page in the Choose a category section, click Web Site and Email.
-
In the Web Site and Email section that appears, next to Domains, click Cancel.
-
In the Select which domains to remove section, next to your domain name, click Remove? and then click Confirm.
-
At your domain registrar, you have to change the name servers for your domain from the Office Live name servers back to the name servers of your DNS hosting service. This means you reverse what you did to Redirect your domain name to Office Live Small Business when you first enrolled your domain. Note that the change in name server for your domain may take up to 48 hours to propagate around the Internet.
-
Enrol your domain in Outlook Live.
Note After you cancel your Office Live service, Outlook 2007 users should create a new Outlook profile to access their Outlook Live mailbox.
