You can create groups in your Contact List and use them to organize your chat contacts.
How do I create a chat group?

Right-click Contact List on any existing chat contact or group and click New > New Group.

Enter a name for your group, and then press ENTER.
What else do I need to know?

To rename a chat group, right-click the group name and click Rename Group. Type the new name in the text box, and then press ENTER.

After you've created a group, add people from your Contact List to it by dragging their names to the group.

Groups in your Outlook Web App Contact List are called Categories in the latest version of Windows Live Messenger.

Groups in your Contacts folder are not shared with your Contact List.
