You can remove people from your chat Contact List.
How do I remove someone from my Contact List?

Right-click the person's name and then click Remove > Remove from IM Contact List.
What else do I need to know?

If you don't want someone in your Contact List to be able to contact you but don't want to remove them, you can block them. When you block a contact, you'll be able to see their status, but they won't see yours and you can't chat with each other.

To block a contact, right-click their name in the Contact List, and then click Block.

If the contact is in a group other than Other Contacts, you'll also see an option to remove them from the group. When you remove a contact from a group, they're moved to the Other Contacts group. If you remove them from the Contact List, they're removed completely.

You can also remove a contact by signing in to your account using Windows Live Messenger.
